The 7-inch Acer Iconia Tab A110 with Android Jelly Bean and Tegra 3 Quad Core to provide competition for Nexus 7

The Taiwan based Acer has decided to enter the competition for the 7 inch tablet market on September with the company’s new and improved Iconia Tab A110 that is expected to rival the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire. The Acer Iconia Tab A110 features an Nvidia Tegra 3 Quad Core processor and the same screen size as the competition, which definitely builds expectations for the device to cost a little over $200 so that it could compete with the Nexus 7. Pictures of the Acer Iconia Tab A110 have indicated that the device will come with Android 4.1 “Jelly Bean” just like the Nexus 7, will makes it the first Acer tablet with Jelly Bean. As for the hardware, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 features a quad-core from Nvidia identical to the one on the Nexus 7. The tablet is also set to be loaded with 1 GB of RAM and 8 or 16GB of flash memory. Although the 1024 × 600 display of the Acer Iconia Tab A110 is lower than the customary 1280 × 800 pixels, the tablet provides a wider selection of connections such as HDMI output and a microSD card slot in addition to the microUSB port. In terms of batteries, the Acer Iconia Tab A110 has a battery capacity of 3420mAh compared to the Nexus 7’s 4325mAh battery.

LaunchTile and DiamondTouch Table Samsung’s latest ammunitions against Apple patents

Samsung has opened another day in court by attacking Apple’s utility patents right at its core, presenting two software systems with similar functionality pre-dating the iOS in general with Adam Bogue, president of Circle 12, presented several images and video of a projection-based touchscreen surface called the DiamondTouch Table, which was developed in 2001 at the Mitsubishi Electronic Research Laboratory (MERL) that included two extremely important pieces of software: Fractal Zoom, which enabled users to modify images using multiple fingers; and Tablecloth which enabled users to pull an image down in a window to reveal an identical image on top of it with the image snapping back to its original position when released, creating a visual effect that looked a lot like Apple’s bounce-back effect.  The DiamondTouch in the MERL lobby can be easily accessed by anyone, creating the possibility that anyone in Cupertino would have had the chance to see the device —Bogue had even stated that he’d given a demonstration to Apple in 2003. However, when questioned by Apple counsel Michael Jacobs, Bogue revealed that Fractal Zoom was actually

A Closer Look at the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720

The official release of  Window 8 is just around the corner, but before we get too excited, let’s take a closer look at the IdeaCentre A720, the impressive all-in-one computer by Lenovo. The IdeaCentre A720 features a  27-inch display with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, an all-glass “frame-less” front, and an Intel Quad-core Core i7 CPU (Ivy Bridge) to run things smoothly. And here’s the kicker: it folds flat so you can play touchscreen table hockey – what else could you possibly ask for? Reviewers have called the device gorgeous, and with good reason: the IdeaCentre A720 is slim and slender enough without looking too “Apple-esque”, putting it in a class of its own. The huge display works to operate the machine with just the touchscreen or, if you prefer, with a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard (included); just plug in the power cord in to get started. The power button on the lower right of the display will fire up the machine, and its 10-point touch-screen is ready to operate. A number of light-up touch-sensitive buttons under the rim near the bottom of the screen can be used to adjust brightness, volume, and a few other settings. There are two HDMI ports (one in, one out) at the bottom left of the machine where you can connect your smartphone, or you can push content out to a much more major-league HD display to turn the IdeaCentre A720 into the biggest wired remote control ever.

First ever Ultrabook with Linux: ZaReason UltraLap 430

There have been numerous Ultrabooks out in the market, but not one has been based on Linux. That is, up until now. Meet the ZaReason UltraLap 430, the Ultrabook that features a 14.1-inch display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1x USB 2.0, HDMI output as well as an SD card. The primary model even ships with an Intel Core i3 Ivy Bridge processor, 4GB RAM, 32GB SSD and a 6-cell battery.  The chip and SSD memory can both be upgraded if you need a little extra storage space and a little more pizzas. Judging from the photo circulating around, it’s easy to say that the term Ultrabook is in fact used in reference to the Ultraportable instead, a feature that is practically a standard in the industry nowadays. The ZaReason UltraLap 430 will be able to run a variety of Linux operating systems such as Ubuntu 12.04, Debian, Fedora, and Linux Mint; moreover, you even have the option to just get it with out an operating system at all for the price of $ 899. Obviously, Linux can also be installed on a Windows device, but the ZaReason UltraLap 430 is definitely much simpler and convenient since everything is all ready to run.

Nook Color and Nook Tablets Prices Slashed to $149-$199 by Barnes & Noble

Barnes & Noble is cutting $20 to $50 off the prices of the company’s NOOK tablets running on Google Android software. A NOOK Color can now be purchased for $149, while an 8GB NOOK Tablet is priced at $179 and the 16GB model retails at $199. The discounts happen almost a year after the release of these B&N tablets. Chances are, Google’s release of a $199 Nexus 7 tablet on summer might have played a part in B&N’s decision to cut prices. Google’s tablet has a higher resolution display and a faster processor compared to the B&N tablets, as well as featuring a front-facing camera and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean software (on top of full access to Google Play Store for countless apps) while the B&N tablets’ advantage is the microSDHC card slots for extra storage not available in Google tablets. Up till a moment ago, the 8GB NOOK Tablet and 8GB Nexus 7 were both sold for the price of $199 and unless the microSDHC card slot is something you can not live without, the Nexus 7 seemed to be the better choice. Now that the NOOK Tablet is $20 cheaper, well, the Nexus 7 still seems to be the better choice; especially since $20 is not that expensive to get you a better screen, faster processor, and better operating system. Alternatively, Google puts a price tag of $249 for a 16GB tablet, while B&N has trimmed $50 off the price of its 16GB NOOK Tablet, costing $199 now. On the other hand, the NOOK Color is still alive and well for penny pinchers. The NOOK Color’s measurements is similar to the newer NOOK Tablet, and has the same 1024 x 600 pixel IPS display, with the B&N’ newer tablets featuring faster 1 GHz TI OMAP 4 dual core processors compared to the NOOK Color’s 800 MHz single core TI OMAP3 CPU. The NOOK gadgets ship with a modified version of Google Android 2.3 Gingerbread tailored to allow you to buy books and apps from the NOOK Shop. There are ways to root the tablets and install custom ROMs (or even boot custom ROMs from a microSD card) to provide the gadgets with a more conventional Android experience, complete with access to the full Google Play Store. However, you can always just buy a Nexus 7 then install the NOOK appto read books from the B&N eBook store.

Samsung refreshing Series 7 Gamer featuring 3D display and AMD Radeon HD 7870M

If the first Samsung dedicated gaming laptop doesn’t meet your expectations and demands, get ready for the company’s new alternative — the Series 7 Gamer is set to get another make over. The Samsung Tomorrow blog by the company calls the latest model as the Series 7 Gamer Yellow 3D, which surpasses the modest version that earned high praises in engadget review of the last model with – what else? — A dazzling yellow finish. Apart from its flair for fashion, the upcoming jumbo notebook will trade its current GPU for an AMD Radeon HD 7870M and, as made clear by the name, a 14.3-inch SuperBright (400 nit) 3D LED display. The new design will also divide its twin drive bays between a 1TB HDD and a fast-booting 128GB SSD. Although news of the international availability for the Samsung Series 7 Gamer has yet to be released, Samsung’s fellow countrymen can get their own Series 7 Gamer on the 14th of August with a price tag of 2.99 million Won, or an approximated $2,643 here in the states.

AMOLED rear view display for Audi R-8 e-tron announced

Audi has confimed that the company’s future releases of the R8 e-tron will arrive later in the year with a digital AMOLED rear-view “mirror” included. Audi is no stranger when it comes to such technologies, as we have witnessed it previously in the company’s R18 race car. What this technology ultimately means is that conventional rear-view mirrors are extinct – at least in the R8 e-tron – and are being replaced with a 7.7-inch AMOLED screen. Audi has given several details, such as explaining that this is a color AMOLED screen that will project the feed from a very lightweight micro camera, which is placed in an “aerodynamically optimized housing” that can be heated when the temperature drops so that you won’t have to worry about your rear-view video feed going dark when winter arrives. The company has also announced that Samsung will provide the AMOLED screen. Needles to say, there are other advantages to the camera and screen setup such as this one, including the reduced glare from other cars’ headlights, as explained by Audi. The AMOLED screen doesn’t even need a back light, thanks to its ability to be “self-illuminating at a low voltage.” Audi has also assured that the screen will provide a “high-contrast, brilliant image” of whatever is happening behind your car, and even though the camera lens’ diameter is only a few millimeters, it is guaranteed to give a wider viewing range compared to the tradtional rear-view mirrors. Audi has also stated in their announcement that the company is looking into “incorporating additional information” on the screen at some point in the future as well, so when the Audi R8 e-tron first makes its debut, it will likely be missing the other added benefits. This is an outstanding innovations without a doubt, but then again, we’ve grown accustomed to expect only the best from Audi. The Audi R8 e-tron is set to be released at the end of the year.

The decision to open source the TextMate 2.0 program made by the developer, Allan Odgaard has indeed surprised many people. This is because the program has become the most popular program for Max text editor. However, the decision of the developer made sense considering the progress of the program. Over the years since the release of the program in 2009, the development of the program seems to be slow. With the move of the program to open source will not guarantee the progress of the program as well. The program may be still slower in its development. Some company including Instapaper’s Marco Arment even has predicted that the move may become the end of the most once popular text editor.
